Local SEO does not have one useful market price because quotes can describe very different work. One provider may be quoting a once-off setup. Another may be quoting monthly work across the profile, website, search terms and reporting. The number only makes sense once the scope is written down.
Shift Local’s ongoing Local Growth service is from R4,950 a month for one business location, with a three-month initial commitment, then 30 days’ written notice. This guide explains what that price covers, what changes a quote and how to compare local SEO proposals without relying on ranking promises.
Start by separating once-off setup from ongoing work
A once-off setup solves a defined list of initial problems. Ongoing local SEO continues to review and improve how the business appears across its website, search results and Google Business Profile.
Shift Local offers two monthly plans:
- Google Business Profile management is from R1,950 a month for one location, with a three-month initial commitment, then 30 days’ written notice. It covers profile audit and optimisation, local keyword research, up to 4 Google Business Profile posts a month, review-link setup and a monthly report.
- Local Growth is from R4,950 a month for one business location, with a three-month initial commitment, then 30 days’ written notice. It includes everything in Google Business Profile management, plus on-page SEO for agreed website pages, basic technical SEO fixes and consistent business details across other listings.
Neither plan guarantees rankings, leads or revenue.
What changes a local SEO quote?
The number of real business locations
One profile and one location are simpler to manage than several staffed locations with different pages, services, hours and reporting needs. Shift Local’s Local Growth plan covers one business location. More than one is scoped separately.
Do not create extra Google profiles or website locations simply to make the business look larger. Each location must reflect how the business actually operates.
The condition of the website
Local SEO work is different when a website already has clear service pages, accurate contact details and working enquiry tracking. A site with conflicting information, broken forms or no useful service content needs foundation work before monthly optimisation can be measured properly.
A new website is not automatically part of a Local Growth quote. Shift Local’s separate Website Build starts from R5,950 once-off.
The number and complexity of services
A focused trade business with four clearly defined services has a different content job from a company with several divisions and customer types. More services can mean more research, more pages and more decisions about which enquiries matter.
The quote should state which services are priorities. A promise to target an unlimited keyword list is less useful than a clear plan around the work the business actually wants.
Competition and current visibility
A business starting with an accurate profile, useful website and real reviews has a different starting point from one with duplicate listings, missing pages or unresolved technical problems. Competition also varies by service and area.
These differences affect the work required. They do not justify a guaranteed position or a guaranteed number of calls.
Measurement and reporting
Ask what the report will connect to the business. Search impressions and ranking checks provide context, but calls, forms, WhatsApp actions, quote requests and bookings are closer to commercial outcomes.
Tracking must still be interpreted carefully. A phone-button tap is not automatically a qualified lead, and a form submission is not automatically a sale.
What should be written in the quote?
Before comparing prices, look for answers to these questions:
- Is the work once-off or monthly?
- Which business location and Google Business Profile are included?
- Which services and customer searches are priorities?
- What website work is included, and what is quoted separately?
- Who approves profile, website and content changes?
- Which reports will be provided and how often?
- Which contact actions or enquiries can be measured?
- What is not included?
If the quote says only “SEO package” and a price, the scope is not clear enough to compare.
Low prices and high prices can both hide a mismatch
A low monthly price may cover a small, useful task or may cover little more than an automated report. A high price may include technical work, several locations, content production or paid tools that a small local business does not need.
Do not judge either price without the list of work. Compare the business problem, the deliverables, the approval process and the measurement plan.
It is also reasonable to start with a smaller once-off review when the business is not ready for monthly work. The purpose should be to identify the most important gaps, not to force every business into a retainer.
How long should you budget for local SEO?
Local SEO is ongoing work, but that does not mean a provider should avoid clear monthly priorities. Each month should have identifiable tasks, completed work and evidence for the next decision.
Timing varies with the starting point, market and work required. No responsible quote can promise a fixed ranking date. Google’s own guidance says that no one can guarantee a number-one position in search results.
Review the arrangement against the agreed business outcomes and the work actually completed, not a promised deadline that cannot be controlled.
A practical starting point for a service business
Before buying a large package, confirm these foundations:
- The business name, contact details, hours and service area are accurate.
- The Google Business Profile represents the real business and location.
- The website explains the priority services clearly.
- Calls, forms or booking actions work on a phone.
- The team knows which enquiries count as qualified.
- The monthly budget can continue long enough for work to be completed and reviewed.
If several of these are missing, ask the provider which ones they will fix first and whether any require separate work.
Common questions
Is Local SEO the same as Google Business Profile optimisation?
No. Profile optimisation is one part of local visibility. Ongoing local SEO can also involve the website, service and location content, search checks, conversion improvements and reporting.
Is a website included in Local SEO pricing?
Not automatically. A provider should state whether website changes, new pages or a full build are included. Shift Local scopes website builds separately from the Local Growth plan.
Should I choose the provider with the most keywords?
Not on that basis alone. Ask which services, areas and enquiries the keywords represent and what work will be done around them.
Can Local SEO guarantee calls or rankings?
No. A provider can commit to an agreed scope, careful implementation and reporting, but cannot guarantee a particular Google position or number of customers.
